The Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center (CAPC) is the leading nonprofit in Orange County, CA directly serving at-risk children and families in crisis to prevent and break the generational cycle of child abuse. Our programs provide critically needed parenting education, case management, and mental health services to families at-risk of abuse. Direct services are provided in the clients’ own homes and ancillary services such as outreach and basic needs are provided throughout the impacted communities of Orange County. The CAPC has an exciting opportunity for an experienced fund development leader to provide oversight and execution of a comprehensive development strategy for one of the most well-regarded not-for-profit organizations in Orange County, CA. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Advancement Officer shall create and oversee the organization's development strategy and support staff, implementing a well-articulated vision for a robust and efficient development effort.  The ideal candidate is a dynamic fundraiser with a proven track record of building and sustaining donor relationships, building a comprehensive development strategy and maintaining diversified funding streams, including major giving, annual campaigns, foundation/corporate support, in-kind support, and high profile events. 

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and refine a comprehensive fund development strategic plan referencing historical performance and reasonable but aggressive income goals.
  • Secure sustainable and renewable philanthropic funds from individuals, foundations, and corporations that will supplement and complement the CAPC’s income from government contracts.
  • Predict and ensure growth of the annual fund and define and maintain a stewardship process that cement’s the ongoing support of major givers.
  • Cultivate new and existing relationships with key supporters, and work with board members to secure and leverage their support and their contacts.
  • Oversee all major and “micro” fundraising events by developing integrated implementation and follow-up plans for recruiting, coordinating and supporting event committees and leadership.
  • Manage, support, evaluate and mentor the Grants development staff who prepare and ensure timely submission of grant applications as outlined in the fund development plan.
  • Manage, support, evaluate and mentor the Donor Relations and Events Manager who implements fundraising events in collaboration with volunteer chairperson(s) and committees.
  • Ensure the integration and leveraging of messaging across various donor outreach platforms to achieve maximum impact among potential and existing donor cohorts.   
  • Ensure a collaborative, efficient and productive work environment among development staff. 
  • Oversee marketing and outreach staff to ensure that messages appeal to donors and print and electronic marketing materials meet the needs of the various development campaigns.

Position Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of raising funds and managing a sophisticated and effective Development Department. Must be energetic, enjoy a fast-paced environment, and have excellent follow through. Must display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, and demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability. This position must be able to effectively paint a picture of the impact of donated funds that will retain and encourage givers.

Other qualifications include:

  • Outgoing, talented communicator who enjoys donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated leadership to a range of constituents and committees.
  • Excellent management of time and talent.
  • Outstanding written skills to craft compelling appeals and correspondence. A writing sample and/or sample proposals may be required of final candidates.
  • Close familiarity with Orange County and its surrounding South Coast areas.
  • Proven success in developing and implementing appeals through both traditional and emerging methodologies is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute small donor cultivation events and to maintain community visibility through various media is essential.
  • Interest in mentoring other staff and volunteers in fundraising and development.
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of the CAPC.
  • High level of comfort in working in a collaborative environment with ability to be flexible as circumstances evolve.
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience using all Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher, as well as strong experience evaluating and implementing donor management software.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a high-level fund development position, including successful management and coaching of development staff, is required. 
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, non-profit management, public relations, communications or related area or an equivalent combination of experience and education is required; a related graduate degree is preferred.
  • Regular participation in professional education sessions is required; CFRE designation preferred.
